Name that land management scheme

Defra are working with Natural England and the Forestry Commission on the design of a new environmental land management scheme.

Countryside and Woodland Stewardship Scheme (CWSS)

Environmental Delivery Partnership Scheme (EDPS)

Environmental and Woodland Management Scheme (EWMS)

Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS)

Biodiversity, Water and Woodland Stewardship Scheme (BWWSS)

Biodiversity and Habitats Stewardship Scheme (BHSS)

Countryside Improvement Grant (CIG)

Land, Water and Woodland Stewardship Scheme (LWWSS)

A shortlist has been drawn up by the three organisations and they’d like to know what you think.

To give your opinion, complete the survey, providing comment and explanation why you feel strongly for or against any of the shortlisted names. The survey is open until 31st January.

The three organisations will then analyse the results and draw a final shortlist of three names for consideration by ministers. Please note further suggestions are not sought.

The name must adhere to the following principles:

  • Reflects the objectives of the scheme, including a woodland element to the scheme.
  • Has synergies with the other developing CAP / Rural Development schemes such as the Basic Payment Scheme and Farming & Forestry Productivity.
  • Reflects a degree of continuity with the previous stewardship schemes in order to build on existing levels of awareness.
  • Has an acronym that isn`t being used elsewhere and isn`t offensive.
  • Avoids the term `new` to ensure it will be relevant for the life of the programme.
  • Avoids the term farming, as scheme applies to range of land, not just farms.
  • Meet the ‘Ronseal test’ (does what it says).
