Updated guidance on Nitrate Vulnerable Zones now available

Defra has set up an email list so that if the guidance is updated they email farmers directly to let them know.  Email: bml0cmF0ZXNkaXJlY3RpdmV0ZWFtQGRlZnJhLmdzaS5nb3YudWs= to be sent a copy of any future updated guidance document directly.

The guidance covers:

  • Principal changes made by the new Regulations
  • Scope and timing of the rules
  • Planning nitrogen use
  • The livestock manure nitrogen farm limit
  • The N max limit
  • Field application of organic manures
  • Field application of manufactured nitrogen fertilisers and other nitrogen containing materials
  • Storing organic manures

There are also step-by-step guides and templates to assist farmers in complying with the rules.

You can check whether your farm is in an NVZ by searching the maps available on the EA website.

An NFU Briefing on the changes and Defra Q&A document are available to explain the differences introduced by the new regulations.

NVZs and Cross Compliance

Compliance with NVZ rules, where applicable, is inspected through cross-compliance SMR 4.  Copies of the revised cross compliance standards can be found on the RPA website.  These supersede information on those pages within The Guide to Cross Compliance in England (2013 edition).
