Technical

The committee identifies the technical challenges affecting the protected ornamentals sector, prioritises them and acts to ensure the available resources are targeted.

To achieve this the committee focuses its activity on:

  • Increasing returns on capital investment and inputs by efficient use of resources
  • Supplying consistent quality produce, plants and flowers to achieve customer satisfaction
  • Meeting the requirements of environmental practice and legislation, and
  • Crop protection

This focus of activity is captured in the BPOA technical committee's industry research needs strategy document, which is regularly reviewed and updated at committee meetings.

You can download the BPOA research strategy document and read it in full by clicking here.

The BPOA technical committee uses this strategy document to steer its assessment and recommendations for future research and development for protected ornamentals growers. The BPOA technical committee then feeds this information into funding bodies such as AHDB Horticulture to help ensure that near-market R&D is industry-led and meeting the needs of growers in the ornamentals sector.

Association members are kept up-to-date by way of grower meetings, newsletters, trips, and technology transfer events. The development and dissemination of information on best practice and new technologies is a priority for the committee.

The technical committee consists of growers, industry consultants and researchers. They meet regularly throughout the year.

It enjoys a close working relationship with the AHDB Horticulture, ensuring the appropriate research proposals, which meet growers' needs, are taken forward. The committee also acts as the first 'grower filter' by reviewing and commenting on AHDB Horticulture research proposals.
