Despite homegrown spring lamb being in plentiful supply at the moment, some supermarkets are continuing to promote end of season New Zealand lamb.

The NFU continues to meet the retailers and meat processors on a regular basis to remind them of their previous commitments on sourcing and to impress the need to ensure they are continuing to back British lamb, that supplies are ample and that the quality is great.

Any retailers who are not seen to be backing British can expect to be highlighted in the coming months.

The NFU has also been promoting the issue to consumers urging them to back British farming and to ensure that it's homegrown lamb that goes into their shopping baskets.

Charles Sercombe, NFU livestock board_198_275NFU livestock board chairman Charles Sercombe said: “British farmers want to see and expect retailers to be marketing British lamb to consumers as ‘Best in Season’ at the moment, putting it front and centre of their displays.

“We will be monitoring the lamb available on the supermarket shelves and with the ample supply of British lamb available, there is absolutely no excuse for not ensuring that our new season, spring lamb is at the forefront of any offering.”
