The FSA staff were shown round a number of farms each at a different stage of production, including turnaround, to fully understand what is involved in modern broiler production, the attention to detail and measures and procedures involved in delivering enhanced bio security.

Kevin Hargin, Head of Foodborne Disease Control at the FSA, commented that the visits were extremely useful and helped in their understanding of the complexities of trying to control Campylobacter. Singled out for particular praise was the effort and dedication of the farm staff in practising enhanced bio security.

In short, all involved agreed a very worthwhile series of visits.

The visit is one of a series of walk the food chain events organised by the NFU over the last twelve months which has seen Catherine Brown and FSA Board members visit broiler farms and a processing plant. All aimed at demonstrating the commitment and dedication shown by the industry to drive down levels of Campylobacter.
