This is a one-off evidence session with the following witnesses:

  • Sian Davies, NFU Chief Dairy Adviser
  • Michael Oakes, NFU Dairy Board Vice Chairman
  • Dr Judith Bryans, Chief Executive Officer, Dairy UK
  • George Eustice, Minister of State for Farming, Food and the Marine Environment

Scope of the inquiry

Farmgate prices for milk have fallen steadily over the past 16 months, putting pressure on dairy farmers across the UK, and in the wider European Union.

At the same time, worldwide demand for milk products has been lower than expected owing to China’s trading downturn and Russia’s import ban on EU produce, among other factors. Protests occurred at supermarkets across the UK over the summer to highlight perceived under-pricing by supermarkets and other major retailers.
