Cambridgeshire County Adviser joins the police on patrol

New Cambridgeshire County Adviser Megan Hudson spent time with the county’s RCAT (Rural Crime Action Team) to gain a better understanding of the work they do supporting farmers and rural communities.

Megan joined the team on a foggy day patrolling rural areas in South Cambridgeshire.

“This really opened my eyes to the challenges the rural team faces covering such a vast area, especially on days when the weather is against them as well,” she said.

“A key takeaway was the importance of reporting rural crime through the correct channels. If a crime is in progress, call 999. If you're reporting after the event, use the online reporting system.

“The police need all crime to be reported. Every report helps the team identify hotspots, spot emerging patterns, target patrols more effectively and demonstrate the impact of their work.”

Local WhatsApp groups are a valuable way of sharing information and updates, but RCAT officers cannot be deployed based solely on WhatsApp messages.

A formal report is needed first, with WhatsApp then helping to provide additional intelligence and live updates.

Megan said: “With incidents such as hare coursing, prompt reporting can make all the difference in helping officers respond quickly.”
