The EA (Environment Agency) says that the overall costs of employing its staff have increased due to the government approved pay award and employer National Insurance contributions.
In addition, it also needs to cover increased costs relating to corporate service and IT systems development costs. As a result, the EA consulted on a one-off increase for some charges (in the range of 7.5% – 14%) in the Environmental Permitting and waste charging schemes in the current period 2025-2026.
From 2026, the EA will be updating all charges in line with inflation. As of the end of March 2026, the EA confirmed that all charges will increase on 1 April 2026 (and annually on 1 April following this) in line with the Consumer Prices Index figure for September from the previous year. The CPI figure for September 2025 was 3.8% and the new charges will apply from 1 April 2026.
