NFU calls for certainty as SFI26 Window 2 set to open in September

The NFU has welcomed confirmation that SFI26 Window 2 is expected to open on 22 September, but says farmers need certainty over future funding opportunities to help businesses plan ahead and continue delivering environmental benefits

SFI26 Windows 1 has now closed (Friday 28 August).

The RPA will continue to process the applications its received and all agreement offers need to be accepted within 30 days.

Applicants are currently receiving an agreement offer within 24 days of submitting their application.

Clear route forward needed

NFU Vice-president Robyn Munt said: “SFI delivers tangible benefits for both farm businesses and the environment, so it is encouraging that the first SFI26 window appears to have met demand from eligible farmers. It is also encouraging that the RPA is turning around applications and offering agreements in a swift manner.

“We welcome the additional funding, wider eligibility and confirmation that the second window will open on 22 September. This will allow members to plan and focus on preparation in the coming weeks.

“With farms facing a cashflow crisis, every eligible business must be able to access SFI26 this autumn. We understand that budgetary pressures may limit access to window 2, but farm businesses that want to deliver for the environment must not be left without a clear route forward.

“The recent closure of the ELMs capital grants offer only reinforces the high level of appetite from farm businesses to invest in long-term land management.

“It’s essential that Defra sets out further details of SFI27 and access to Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier.

“Farmers need this certainty to invest in more resilient businesses and continue delivering environmental benefits next year.”
