As we're asking for member input on who they want their County Officeholders to vote for at the NFU elections in February. You can meet the candidates here: NFU officeholder elections 2026 – NFUonline
We will also have an update on Minette’s Profitability Review.
The NFU submission to the farm profitability review focuses on the key enablers for improving the profitability of sustainable food, energy and fibre production. We believe the review presents an important opportunity to identify the key reforms which could support this central function of farming businesses, to underpin national food security and meet our domestic environmental targets.
We have outlined three key areas where reform has the potential to drive competitiveness and profitability:
- Enhancing opportunities for investment through improved access to finance, the effective use of tax reliefs, a drive for greater energy resilience, and a stable policy environment to enable enduring levels of positive investor confidence.
- Creating the right conditions to support business development through enabling planning and smart, modern regulatory frameworks, and applied near-market R&D and knowledge transfer.
- Reforming markets incentives and supply chain relationships to ensure farmers can compete on a level playing field with international competitors, release the opportunities of domestic and export market growth, while also benefiting from strengthened and more equitable relationships within supply chains. Given the persistence of market-failures in the agri-food chain, incentives such as the government’s ELMs (Environmental Land Management scheme), including the SFI (Sustainable Farming Incentive) and the mobilisation of private capital through supply-chain insetting agreements to support sustainable farming practices, have an important role to play in aligning environmental delivery with the profitable production of food, energy and fibre.
Together, these reforms would create a more collaborative and equitable market where farmers and growers could leverage market and business data to optimise investment decisions to drive profitability and growth in the long term.
