  • A newly launched Young Entrants Scheme to help and encourage first generation talent into the farming industry.

The Farming Community Network


The Farming Community Network (FCN) is a voluntary organisation and charity that supports farmers and families within the farming community through difficult times and in managing change.

The charity has over 400 volunteers across England and Wales who are available to support anyone who seeks help, regardless of whether the issue is personal or business-related. FCN runs a confidential helpline (03000 111 999), which is open every day from 7am–11pm, as well as an e‑helpline ([email protected]).

Each year FCN helps approximately 6,000 people deal with a variety of issues, including financial difficulties, animal disease, mental health and family disputes.

Throughout our 110–year history we have worked closely with the National Farmers Union to support the farming industry and rural communities.

Today our relationship has never been stronger. Our voluntary financial support for the NFU was £6.546 million in 2020 – this benefits members of both organisations and supports our shared local network of over 300 agency offices.

Our insurance policies protect three quarters of the UK’s farmers, covering those running small farms through to larger enterprises. As a mutual at the heart of the rural community, we continue to move with the times, developing our products and services to support businesses that have diversified to capitalise on new opportunities, or adopted precision technology and practices to improve productivity.

We also offer Union Advantage, available to NFU members who commit to insure with us for at least three years. Union Advantage offers discounts of 20% on NFU Mutual Risk Management Services Limited consultancy and training days, as well as exclusive cover benefits.

NFU Mutual has introduced a range of measures to support our farming customers during the pandemic such as the inclusion of COVID‑19 in Personal Accident and Group Personal Accident policies, as well as free access to services from selected partners. These include Maybe*Tech who help independent businesses grow using social media tools, and Inoni who are experts in business continuity planning.

We also run initiatives and support a wide range of charities to help farmers and their families. In 2021 we invested £430,000 in measures to prevent rural crime, including a dedicated agricultural-vehicle theft unit at the National Crime Intelligence Service to help identify and recover stolen vehicles, and funding for the newly established ACE (Agricultural and Construction Equipment) police unit.

We are proud to support the award‑winning Farm Safety Foundation and its UK‑wide activities designed to preserve and protect the physical and mental wellbeing of the next generation of farmers and reduce the number of life‑changing injuries and deaths in the industry.

In 2021 NFU Mutual donated £3m to help local and national charities. The NFU Mutual Charitable Trust donates to national and regional organisations, many of which help farmers and rural communities nationwide including the Addington Fund, RABI, Farm Community Network, National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs and The Prince’s Countryside Fund, amongst others.
