Family farm tax – NFU President meets with PM

During a meeting with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer last week, NFU President Tom Bradshaw discussed the recent vote on the part of the Finance Bill relating to the family farm tax and told the Prime Minister that there is still time to take action to protect the vulnerable and elderly.

After speaking with the Prime Minister during a private meeting held at No.10, NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “I was pleased to have time with the Prime Minister on Friday. We covered several important topics, from the impact of geopolitics on British farming and the importance of food production here at home, to how government could help with policies that unlock farming’s potential and restore much-needed confidence to invest.

“On the family farm tax, I again reminded the Prime Minister of this cruel and unjust policy which traps the most vulnerable and elderly.

“After more than 30 Labour MPs abstained on a vote on a resolution related to the inheritance tax changes on family farms last week, we have seen the true strength of feeling against this awful tax.”

It is clear to me the Prime Minister is listening to the clear messages he is hearing from Labour MPs, and their constituents.”

Still time to take action

Tom added: “From Friday’s meeting, it is clear to me the Prime Minister is listening to the clear messages he is hearing from Labour MPs, and their constituents. There is still time to take action to remove those most at risk from the eye of this storm.

“In many sectors farming has faced declining production over recent years including poultry, beef, cereals and vegetables. The government has a significant opportunity to reverse these declines and boost economic growth if it puts supportive policies in place for planning, commits to sector-by-sector targets in the Food Strategy and delivers on the recommendations that will be contained within the Farm Profitability Review.

“There is the opportunity to boost farming profitability, deliver on the manifesto commitment around food security and improve the resilience of our food system.”
