Shropshire farmers are being asked to contribute formal views to a consultation looking at ways to store 100 million cubic metres of water during large flood events in the Upper Severn catchment.

The SVWMS (Severn Valley Water Management Scheme) is exploring how water can be temporarily stored and slowed by using both natural and engineered interventions and has launched a consultation running until 11 March 2026.

Have your say. The consultation and emerging plan can be accessed online.

"We are engaging with you now to help ensure that the final SVWMS Strategy reflects your views and makes best use of local knowledge from those who know this area best," SVWMS says in the document.

"Your feedback will help us understand what might and might not work and identify any further thinking that’s needed. Please provide any formal feedback by 11 March 2026 to help us develop the strategy.

"The rivers in the Upper Severn are at the heart of our communities. Floods and droughts are hitting harder, faster, and closer to home. We need to work together to build resilience and store and slow up to 100 million cubic metres of water (equivalent of 40,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools) during large flood events."

NFU Shropshire County Adviser Edward Garratt is organising member meetings on the consultation for January and members impacted will be invited to attend via email once these are finalised.
