I write this months update after spending Day One at Cereals and another day setting up for this years Royal Three Counties Show, of which Gloucestershire is the host, fully in the thick of Show Season!
We are really looking forward to welcoming you to our stand this weekend - the kettles are ready for your teas and coffees, and the cakes look excellent! However, despite the hospitality offerings, we have much more that you can join us for.
11.30am - NFU President Tom Bradshaw, is holding a Question & Answer Session
12.45pm - NFU National Livestock Board Chair David Barton & National Dairy Board Chair Ian Harvey, are holding a discussion on what the NFU is doing for both sectors and willing to answer questions. This session will be a couple of hours after the TB Refresh Session in the Future of Farming Theatre so please do come along.
2pm - We are hosting a ‘Next Gen’ Roundtable with NFU President Tom Bradshaw and NFU Vice President Robyn Munt, Chaired by our Student & Young Farmer Ambassador Nat Watkins.
4.30pm - County Reception, please do join us to sample some fantastic local Gloucestershire produce, hear from your County Chair Liz Godsell and enjoy socialising with fellow farmers at the end of Day One.
On Saturday, we also have Combinable Crops Adviser Luke Cox, and Gloucestershire Combinable Crops reps, Charles Day & James Crops, hosting a drop in session from 2pm. Come along to ask questions and hear all about the crops sector and the NFU's work, including the newly announced Fertiliser Resilience Plan.
Along side the above, we also have Planning Firm Acorus and our Legal Panel firm Clarke Willmott on stand on the Friday for you to speak too.
We look forward to seeing you across the three days, whether attending one of the sessions or simply resting your feet and enjoying some cake - you will be welcome.
SFI Update and Ongoing Lobbying
Further detail was released on the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) on the 2nd June. Whilst this additional information is welcomed, we recognise that clarity remains a key concern for members, particularly around scheme rules and long-term budget transparency. As such we are in the process of arranging a meeting with colleagues for you to attend and pose your questions - please keep an eye out for this.
In the meantime will continue to lobby government to ensure farmers have the confidence needed to engage with SFI26 and plan ahead. There are several useful resources available on NFU Online to support you:
Bovine TB Strategy
Just this week, the government’s refreshed bTB strategy has been released. The NFU has responded with a clear focus on the need for a science-led, comprehensive approach that supports farmers in managing disease risk while maintaining viable businesses. Read our response here:
Fertiliser Resilience
At Day One of Cereals, we continued to highlight the importance of fertiliser resilience as a key component of farm business stability. Recent work has focused on ensuring supply chain security and supporting practical solutions for growers. Members can read more about this through the NFU’s fertiliser resilience work here:
As we come closer to Harvest, we are also undertaking another Health and Safety Event- please do watch your emails for the registration links and do try and attend. We hope to see you there.
As always, please do get in touch if we can be of any help.
