Your Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire county NFU update

A busy harvest season

Harvest is now in full swing across our three counties. Like many of you, while not at my desk working on behalf of members, I am sat on a loader or tractor getting in hay and straw! The June heatwave and now what appears to be a prolonged warm and dry spell means it has been a warm start to the summer.

We have sadly already seen several fires cropping up across the patch, so please do stay vigilant and take extra care when cleaning down machines or when working in flinty fields.

Health and safety has been a key agenda item for the last month. Alongside work I have done with HQ on trailer safety, that you may have seen on social media, we have hosted our online and in person BBO health and safety meetings which have included speakers from SSE, Thrings, fire and rescue services and NFU health and safety teams.

We are just finalising the date for our 2027 event at Kubota in Thame, so you can get this in your diaries early on. Even if you come away with one nugget of information, new overhead powerline stickers for your machines, or a reminder of something that has gone wrong before and how you have worked to rectify it, then it is time well spent. As our campaign says: take 5 to stay alive.

I also attended the NFU Hungerford vs Carter Jonas Cricket Match which, due to a large storm, was declared to be a draw. We are still looking at how we can stage a cricket tournament in BBO, to revive a local NFU tradition which runs back to before the First World War. More details will be revealed as harvest comes to an end, but if you are keen to join a local branch team, please do reach out.

While not BBO, it was in BBO

Last week, in my role of secretary for the South Combinable Crops board, I brought them to Oxfordshire! We visited Matthews Flour Mill and FarmEd in West Oxfordshire for the day. While the tours of both were interesting, comparisons of margins and operation size with farms further into the South West gave the board a different perspective on the growth of regenerative farming in Oxfordshire and how varied the region is in conventional cereals.

And finally…

At this years Bucks County Show we have Tom Bradshaw joining us for the day with several MP roundtables planned, so please do keep an eye out for the invite to what should be a varied and interesting day on our two stands.

While on the topic of MPs, if you are keen to have your local MP out on farm, and not sure where to start, then do reach out to myself or your local group secretary and we can work with you to get your local MP to come and see how your farming operation looks and the challenges you are facing.

Bucks Council Tree Mission Pilot

Bucks Council are offering tree packs to land owners for plaiting this winter, more details below:

We're encouraging landowners and community groups to support tree planting as part of the Bucks Tree Mission: a shared mission to plant trees for a greener future.

As well as continuing to plant on our own land, we are keen to support landowners interested in planting on their own land. This winter we are offering the following support: Tree Pack Pilot Winter 2026-27

Free tree packs to landowners as part of our continued commitment to improve our environment, help mitigate and adapt to climate change, boost biodiversity and improve our green spaces for communities. This is a pilot programme to support landowners across the county as part of the Bucks Tree Mission target to plant 543,000 trees across Buckinghamshire. A

Enhanced grant funding with Woodland Trust:

Bucks Tree Mission is offering to uplift funding agreements issued through Woodland Trust MOREwoods to encourage more tree planting in our county.

MOREwoods (and MOREhedges) currently offers landowners with land available over 0.5ha up to 75% capital establishment costs on self-planted schemes, with the landowner contributing the remaining 25%. Buckinghamshire Council will enhance this offer, such that the landowner contribution will be reduced to 10%, with the council covering the remaining 15%. The landowner will still need to arrange and cover the costs for planting. Read the full details of Woodland Trust funding and eligibility. To take advantage of this offer, prospective applicants should still apply using the Woodland Trust online application process, listing Buckinghamshire Council as ‘applicant’ and themselves as ‘landowner’.

Interested landowners can also contact the Bucks Tree Mission directly to discuss proposals and application process further [email protected]

Oxfordshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy – Member Update

Oxfordshire published its Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) in November 2025, setting out a shared vision for a bigger, better connected network of habitats across the county. The aim is to support nature recovery while unlocking wider benefits for people, rural businesses and agriculture. We encourage members to explore the interactive habitat map tool to see whether any suggested actions fall on or near your land. These mapped actions are not mandatory. They do not create new rules, nor do they prevent development or restrict land use. Instead, the mapping is intended to help direct investment and funding to the areas most likely to deliver nature and biodiversity benefits.

Cotswolds Rivers Trust: Free Site Visits for Landowners

The NFU would like to highlight support available to members from the Cotswolds Rivers Trust, an independent environmental charity working to restore and protect the water environment.

The Trust is offering free site visits to landowners to discuss water related projects and opportunities. This includes expert advice on river channel improvements, pond and wetland creation and natural flood management measures, delivered in collaboration with partner organisations.

Working across the Upper Thames, Windrush, Evenlode and Cherwell catchments, the Trust can also support landowners to access capital funding and provide guidance on Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes.
