Summer show season ahead

We are now into high summer and at the time of writing combines have started to roll. The rain in June provided some relief for those with livestock, although this week’s heat and the heatwave recently has quickly evaporated any good grazing!

June was a busy month with lots happening in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Hampshire's health and safety event, kindly hosted by Hall & Burge, was a fantastic event with over 100 attendees having their annual refresher on health and safety, this year with a particular focus on health.

My thanks to those who attended and to those who spoke at the event, everyone freely gave their time to deliver the day. This is firmly now one of the highlights of the calendar, and we will run the event again next year. For those who didn’t attend, remember to take 5 to stay alive.

I attended the Hampshire Farmers Club farm walk, helping run the bar which was sponsored by NFU Mutual, Winchester, Alton and Wickham and it was great to see so many members excelling in the classes. Congratulations to Stephen and Chris Horn on being crowned champion this year.

The Isle of Wight farm walk was held on a blisteringly hot day, but we had a nice crowd come along to Anna Smith’s farm at Compton. The sea breeze at the top of the farm overlooking Compton Bay was a light relief from the heat and I must say, the farm arguably has one of the best views in the country! Thank you, Anna and Neville, for hosting and to the National Trust for providing some insights into the nature we saw on the farm.

The proposed Beaver release application on the Isle of Wight, I know continues to cause concern. Please do fill out the beaver survey  and make sure your voice is heard. My particular thanks to Ellie Newman our environment and land use advisor for her work on this and to John Heather and Caroline Knox for their assistance.

I look forward to seeing as many members as possible at the two forthcoming Hampshire shows. New Forest Show is from 28 to 30 July. On Wednesday 29 at 1.30pm we have Vice-president, Robyn Munt is speaking, with New Forest Fruit, strawberries and Hambledon sparkling for those attending! Sign up here.

The Alresford Show is on Saturday 5 September is  and we have Paul Tompkins, NFU Deputy President attending for our annual officeholder breakfast. Paul will address members in the show’s members tent at 8am, with breakfast rolls from 7.30am. Paul will be around the show until late-morning. Sign up here

Finally, this week I attended a parliamentary round table on abattoirs in Westminster hosted by Farnham and Bordon MP, Greg Stafford. East Hampshire, MP, Damian Hinds was also in attendance, along with another Labour MP and shadow farming minister Robbie Moore. This was a great chance to highlight the huge issues facing the small/medium sized abattoir sector, something that is critical for our local food economy.

Dates for the diary:

28 to 30 July: New Forest Show, member reception with NFU Vice-president, Robyn Munt, who will update members on various policy matters on Wednesday 29 July at 1.30pm, strawberries and sparkling for those attending.

3 September: Greg Stafford MP, Farnham and Bordon meeting. Open to members with a particular interest in the lack of abattoir provision in our region. Please contact me if you would like to attend.

5 September: Alresford show. Deputy President Paul Tompkins will update members at the member breakfast at 8am, breakfast rolls from 7.30am.

New Forest Show: Vice-president's reception

The NFU along with the NFU Mutual, will again be at the New Forest show again this year.

The show runs from 28 to 30 July and is a popular show especially for our New Forest members.

On Wednesday 29 July, we will have an office holder update with NFU Vice-president, Robyn Munt who will be addressing members at 1.30pm in the NFU marquee.  We will be serving strawberries and cream, and sparkling wine all sourced from local members.

Please come along and listen to what is going on in the NFU and what Robyn has been up to in her first few months in the job. The uplands and support schemes are among her policy briefs so New Forest commoners will be keen to hear what development there are.

Your local New Forest team and county advisor will be at the show for the three days, so if you are unable to make the update on the Wednesday please do come along for a cup of tea or coffee and meet the team.

There are various tastings and updates from local suppliers throughout each day.

If you would like to attend the office holder update, please let the local group secretary, Darren Seward or county adviser Tom Peters know.

Isle of Wight Proposed Beaver release - have your say

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has formally submitted a licence application to Natural England for the wild release of beavers into the Eastern Yar catchment.

The application proposes an initial five-year licence period, followed by a formal review if successful.

The NFU has worked hard to engage with the Trust and other stakeholders as the project has developed, to ensure that members’ businesses are not impacted by the release and to feed the views of farmers and land managers directly into the discussions.

Natural England will now review the application in detail and undertake consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. This is expected to take approximately four to six months.

We have put together a survey to gather your views about the proposed beaver release, so we can have the evidence to send to Natural England about this specific license application and any asks which we might have.

Please do fill out the survey to help contribute to this.

Complete the survey

The NFU will continue to make sure members’ interests are represented throughout this process, particularly in relation to:

  • Uniqueness of the island and suitability of beavers
  • Potential impacts on agricultural land and businesses
  • Clarity on management responsibilities and accountability
  • Availability of funding and support for affected landowners
  • Practical arrangements for mitigation and rapid response

We recognise that beaver reintroduction raises a range of views and concerns and it is important that members are aware of developments at an early stage, so we will keep you updated on any consultations as they are announced, and as further details of the application and consultation process emerge.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to discuss how this may affect your business, please contact Environment and Land Use Adviser Ellie Newman.

Humane Animal Dispatch Scheme – Make a Real Difference in Hampshire

Hampshire and the IOW police are looking for volunteers to become animal dispatch officers.

Are you passionate about animal welfare and committed to maintaining the highest standards of humane practice?

Later this year, the force will be opening applications for new volunteers to join our Humane Animal Dispatch (HAD) Scheme in Hampshire—an opportunity to play a vital role in safeguarding animal welfare while supporting your local community.

Why Join the HAD Scheme?

The Humane Animal Dispatch Scheme brings together skilled, responsible individuals who are dedicated to ensuring that animals are treated with dignity at all times, particularly in difficult or emergency situations. Volunteers within the scheme provide a crucial service—responding promptly when humane dispatch is required, helping to prevent unnecessary suffering.

By becoming a HAD volunteer, you will:

  • Contribute directly to animal welfare in your local area
  • Use your skills and experience in a meaningful and responsible way
  • Work as part of a respected and professional network
  • Support ethical countryside management and emergency response efforts

This is more than a voluntary role—it is a commitment to compassion, professionalism, and public service.

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking individuals with proven experience and the right qualifications to maintain the high standards expected of the scheme. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Hold the DMQ HAD Award
  • Hold an Open Certificate on FAC (Firearms Certificate)
  • Possess a full UK driving licence
  • Hold both FAC & Shotgun certificates
  • Have previous experience in animal dispatch

These requirements ensure that all volunteers are fully prepared to carry out humane dispatch safely, legally, and effectively.

For those who may not yet hold the required qualification, there are several upcoming opportunities in Hampshire to obtain the DMQ HAD Award, including:

The Role of a HAD Volunteer

As a HAD volunteer, you may be called upon to respond to a variety of situations where humane dispatch is necessary. This requires:

  • Calm decision-making under pressure
  • Strong practical skills and sound judgement
  • A clear understanding of animal welfare principles
  • Respect for legal and safety frameworks

Volunteers operate with professionalism and sensitivity, often in challenging circumstances, and their contribution is highly valued by both the community and partner organisations.

Make a Difference Where It Matters Most

If you already have the qualifications and experience listed above, this is your opportunity to be part of a scheme that has a genuine and lasting impact. Your involvement will help ensure that animals in distress are dealt with swiftly and humanely, reflecting the highest standards of care.

Apply Later This Year

Recruitment for new HAD Volunteers in Hampshire will open later this year. We encourage all eligible individuals to consider applying and joining a dedicated network committed to responsible animal welfare.

Keep an eye out for further details and application guidance—you could soon be making a difference when it matters most.  Or for further information please contact, county advisor, Tom Peters.

Waste Exemptions - Environment Agency

Waste exemptions have changed recently.  The Environment Agency (EA) can now ask for these documents on waste exemptions on EA inspections.  This came into force on April 1st 2026.

This reform is part of a broader consultation the EA (Environment Agency) conducted on charge proposals, which also addresses fees related to waste crime and updated hourly rates.

The aim is to improve regulatory oversight, ensure environmental protection, and make the system more cost-effective for the EA.

The reforms introduce charges for waste exemptions, impacting a wide range of operators, including farmers. As part of this process, the NFU reviewed the proposals and gathered feedback from members to inform its response.

Charges will be paid at the point of registration or renewal.

Isle of Wight & Hampshire Beaver Updates

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has been developing a proposal for a wild beaver release on the Isle of Wight since 2021. The proposed release area focuses on the Eastern Yar and Wroxall Stream catchments, where conservation organisations collectively manage over 600 hectares of wetlands. The Trust has been engaging with riparian landowners, farmers, and local stakeholders over the last three years through workshops, site visits and a steering group. Following the legalisation of wild beaver releases in March 2025, the project has now been invited by Natural England to submit a full licence application for a proposed 10‑year programme.

In Hampshire, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the Forestry Commission established the first Hampshire Beaver Advisory Group in 2024 in response to beavers naturally dispersing along the Hampshire Avon and nearby tributaries. The group brings together key stakeholders and statutory bodies to share information, coordinate local understanding and consider county specific issues, particularly relating to sensitive habitats such as chalk streams and the New Forest. The Advisory Group does not manage beaver releases or provide operational support, however, it acts as an important coordination forum. As beavers continue to expand naturally, the group is expected to support the development of local Beaver Management Groups and help build capacity within catchment partnerships. This work will align with the forthcoming National Beaver Strategy, which is currently being co‑designed by Natural England, the Environment Agency, Defra and national stakeholders.
