Asbestos Update

Defra is currently in the process of creating an advice document aimed at farmers and growers regarding the handling and disposal of white asbestos (Chrysolite) and asbestos cement.

This activity comes after the NFU raised this issue with Defra Minister, Lord De Mauley and Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir Mark Walport in the summer. During correspondence the NFU requested further guidance and clarification on the handling and use of white asbestos.

Whilst we welcome this further guidance we feel the guide in itself does not yet fully clarify the position for farmers. We would like clear guidance, which non-health and safety professionals could understand, as to when work on farm buildings containing white asbestos would be licensable, non-licensable and notifiable.

Once we receive further information from Defra in the New Year we will be able to update members on this issue and seek comments.
