Sheep in snow

Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to be most affected on Wednesday and Thursday, with up to 5cm of snow is expected in low-lying areas and 10cm in on higher ground.

Strong gusty winds are also expected and visibility may be reduced.

Disruption could be more widespread as the week progresses and those planning to travel or spend extended periods of times outdoors are advised to keep an eye on the weather forecast.

The whole of the UK will experience significantly cooler weather from Wednesday onwards, forecasters say, and there is ‘the potential for snow’ in most parts.

The Met Office warning said: “A cold front is expected to cross the UK during Wednesday, introducing much colder conditions to central and northern England in particular. Very strong winds will accentuate the cold. Snow showers are likely in most areas, but especially the North West where significant accumulations are likely to build up, especially in hilly areas.
