Tractor Safety

manifesto asks, tractor on road, transport, general election 2015_27746

In 2015/2016 tractor related incidents accounted for almost 25% of fatal accidents in agriculture.

The full accident circumstances are not yet fully known but it appears that the vehicle overturned trapping the driver. It is important to remember that accidents on slopes are not confined to hilly or mountainous terrain. They can happen just as easily on or near banks, ditches, drains, ramps, uneven or flat ground.

A roll bar or safety cab is essential on mobile equipment as they are designed to provide protection should the vehicle overturn. Even with roll over protection fitted you should also have a lap belt or seat belt fitted and used at all times to minimise the risk of injury. Also adequate training in safe driving techniques is essential.

Guidance on using tractors safely is available here.

Guidance on safe driving near slopes is available here.

The HSE are currently investigating the accident and it is not yet certain whether it will be recorded as an agricultural accident or a service industry accident given the particular  circumstances in this accident.

However this accident is recorded when the HSE finish their investigation the message for all those using tractors as part of their work is to do so safely.
