Farm Safety: Risk Management

Why do you need a Health & Safety management system?

Every business has a duty to meet Health & Safety regulations and if you don't comply you are breaking the law. A good Health & Safety management system can help prevent accidents, injury or even fatalities, the costs of which it is not possible to insure against.

For this reason, the NFU offers its members several benefits to help guide them through the process:

  • Health & Safety Business Guides - user-friendly and easy to understand legal guidance booklets are written and regularly updated to assist members with legal matters they may face when running a farming business.

Farm safety e-learning course - coming soon!

From 1 November, the NFU will be offering members access to a new e-learning course on safety.

The course is provided by Lantra and has been developed with the HSE with the aim of helping farmers better identify and manage every day safety risks in the farm workplace. The course has eight modules covering the major causes of injury in the farm workplace such as machinery, falls from height, falling objects, livestock, electricity, and vehicles. It will take approximately two hours to complete in one sitting but can be broken into sections and completed over a convenient period of time.

The course will help farmers understand their legal responsibilities for their health and safety and that of their employees, contractors, visitors, and anyone affected by their work. On completion of the course a certificate is awarded.

The NFU will be offering the e-learning course to members at a discount to the normal retail price at £18.00 per head. Watch this space!
