New assessment-only route offers faster poultry certification
British Poultry Training has announced a new route through which producers can become certified to required industry training standards.
A new ‘Assessment First Route’ to securing the City & Guilds Diploma in Work-Based Agriculture (Poultry Production) is now available and offers industry professionals with the prerequisite knowledge and skills the opportunity to become certified through an assessment only process, without the need to attend additional training.
What is the Diploma?
The Diploma (or an equivalent qualification) is a requirement for all staff occupying roles sitting at Level 2 (stockperson/multi-skilled operatives) and Level 3 (assistant manager/manager) within the Poultry Passport Scheme. The Poultry Passport Scheme represents responsibility within the sector as a cornerstone of professional development, promoting welfare, safety, and traceability through structured, lifelong learning.
BPT (British Poultry Training), a partnership between the BPC (the British Poultry Council), NFU, Lantra and Poultec Training, provides the governance of the Poultry Passport Scheme.
The scheme is administered by Poultec Training’s administration arm which maintains the central training record system and verifies qualifications; this operates independently of Poultec Training’s training arm, which is one of the diploma providers.
Red Tractor facilitates compliance with the Poultry Passport Scheme on behalf of BPT, with appropriate Poultry Passport certification for businesses, and individuals within them, a requirement within the Red Tractor Poultry Standards.
Why has the new route been developed?
The BPT management group acknowledged that a direct, assessment first route to Diploma-level certification must be made available for producers with the necessary prerequisite knowledge and skills, such as those holding Grandfather Rights in terms of any legal obligation for training.
The new route has been designed for poultry workers who can demonstrate they are already sufficiently competent and will hopefully be welcomed by those with significant experience of working with poultry already.
The ‘Assessment First Route’ is primarily designed to minimise the time and cost associated with certification for experienced poultry keepers, by removing the need to attend training sessions.
Where can I access training?
The City & Guilds Diploma in Work-based Agriculture (poultry) is available from City & Guilds approved centres. Details of centres providing this qualification can be found on the City & Guilds website.
