A Carlisle Group Secretary has retired after almost six years of service to NFU members.

Michael Barnes joined NFU Mutual at Penrith in July 1987, initially as an underwriter before moving into a number of other roles, including a brief stint in the early 90s as an NFU group secretary in Kendal. He became a group secretary and NFU Mutual agent at the Carlisle Agency in the middle of the Covis-19 pandemic in July 2020. He retired from both roles at the end of March.

Michael says there have been many contrasting experiences during his NFU career.

He said: “The foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 was a very difficult time, but on a more positive note, the NFU’s recent win on inheritance tax was a great result. It’s nice to play a part in an organisation that achieves an outcome like that for its members. There’s a feel-good factor about getting things done.”

Leaving Carlisle in good hands

He went on to say: “It’s the people and characters you meet that make your job interesting. I’ve been very fortunate to have enjoyed my work over the years, teaming up with some great colleagues and being able to help many members.

“Carlisle was a really good set-up when I was lucky enough to join it and, when I depart, it will continue to thrive. I’m leaving it in good hands – and I have offered to be on the end of the phone if the Carlisle team ever need me!

“I’ve had a lot of kindness shown to me over the years from NFU members and customers of the Mutual. Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me during my time with both organisations.”
Michael’s other job, which he claims is his most important one, is that of secretary of the Cumbria NFU Golf Society – a role he will continue into his retirement.

He said: “Our membership is around 95-strong and we play once a month from April to October. Members come for an afternoon of golf and to socialise with other farmers from around the county and can forget about the farm for a short while. The society is part of a vibrant NFU community and I’m proud of the role it plays in bringing people together.”
