Mr Wornham, a fourth generation farmer, replaces Duncan Priestner as chairman after serving as his vice since 2012.

He said: “I’m delighted to have been elected as chairman of the poultry board and I am excited to lead the industry through what will be a time of change, challenges and opportunities.

“As an industry, we are rightly proud of our high standards across both egg and poultry meat sectors, and it is crucial these standards are protected and maintained as we move towards the future.

“As a board, we will be working extremely hard to ensure poultry farmers across the country have the best possible environment to farm in the years ahead.

“I would finally like to thank Duncan for his years of service to the industry, and this board, and his fantastic leadership as chairman.”

Leicestershire farmer Phill Crawley has been elected as vice-chairman of the board. Mr Crawley produces colony and free-range eggs.

He said: “This is an exciting time for the poultry sector and I am pleased to have been elected as vice-chairman of the board. I look forward to supporting Tom as chairman and representing poultry members for the NFU.”
