A new report highlights the crucial contribution agriculture makes to the economy and community across the NFU East region

The report celebrates a sector that underpins an agrifood chain that contributes £13.6 billion annually to the regional economy and direct employs more than 65,000 people.

And the NFU East report – Farming in the East, why agriculture matters – goes behind the impressive statistics to showcase the people producing our food, from a first-time poultry producer who has built a multi-million pound business to a couple trialling the UK’s first rice crop.

It also sets out how the NFU is working on behalf of its members across the 10 counties of the East region, addressing their concerns and supporting their businesses.

The report was launched in London with members of the NFU East regional advisory board.

A common set of challenges

NFU East Regional Director Dr Zoe Leach said: “Every member business is unique, but farmers and growers across the East face a common set of challenges.

“Access to water, labour supplies, high input costs, biosecurity, taxation, climate change, rural crime, devolution and mental health are among the issues that affect our members.

“That’s what makes the work of NFU East so important. We’re proud to represent almost 7,000 farmers and growers across this region.

“This report explores the many ways the NFU’s influence delivers for members on the issues that matter most to their businesses.

“Its message is clear. Farmers and growers across our region work hard, every day, to contribute to our national food security, care for our environment, enhance the rural economy, and support local communities.

“Their work matters to everyone who calls the East of England home.”

The vital role played by the industry is highlighted by statistics including:

  • The East region produces over half of England’s top and small fruits
  • Over 30% of cereal crops are grown in the East
  • More than one third of England’s potatoes are grown here
  • There are over 250,000 acres of on-farm woodland
  • Farmers across the East manage over 14,000 agri-environment agreements.

In addition, the report sets out NFU East’s democratic structure, explains how members can shape its work, and features examples of how it has made a difference for members across the region.

Creating a supportive environment

These include supporting members affected by serious hare coursing incidents in Cambridgeshire, helping to protect farmland from flooding in Norfolk, meeting almost 100 MP candidates before the 2024 general election and securing 1,000 free property marking kits to help deter criminals in Sussex.

Dr Leach said: “It is vital that we come together to celebrate the work our farmers and growers do and create a supportive environment to allow the industry to thrive.

“This is essential if NFU members are to have the confidence they need to invest and grow their businesses, so they can continue to provide the services that so greatly benefit our region.”

NFU East Regional Board Chair Alan Clifton-Holt said: “This report celebrates the varied nature of farming and growing across the East of England, showcasing a diverse range of farming businesses united by common challenges.

“We hope it will support the NFU’s engagement work with stakeholders across the East, including MPs and mayoral candidates, and help to improve awareness and understanding of agriculture across the region.”
