The NFU is seeking member feedback on the proposal to release White-tailed Eagles in Cumbria - complete our survey and have your say by Wednesday 18 March.

Since 2022, The Lifescape Project and the University of Cumbria have been developing proposals to restore a White-tailed Eagle population to Cumbria through a licensed reintroduction near Lake Windermere. Early research suggests suitable habitat exists, and further ecological and heritage assessments are underway.

The current proposal could involve releasing up to 66 young White-tailed Eagles over five years. Any release would require licences from Natural England and NatureScot and would involve engagement with farmers, land managers, and local stakeholders.

A wide public consultation has already taken place, showing around 78% general support. The project team is now seeking organisational views, including from the NFU.

The NFU has launched a survey to gather views from members and the wider farming and land managing cohort, to understand the potential benefits, concerns, and impacts on farming, livestock management, rural businesses, and the wider landscape.

Cumbria, Lancashire, Northumberland and North Yorkshire members are encouraged to complete the survey and share their views by 5pm on Wednesday 18 March.
