Around 100 members attended an event in Hampshire, which was hosted by Hall & Burge, just outside Winchester. Speakers included the county’s fire and police services, SSE looking at powerline safety and panel firm Thrings.
Vue CCTV showed their HFR cameras, which can tell if someone steps into a vehicle’s blind spot, and in-machine cameras that can help improve operator safety.
Sarah Stephens from the NFU transport team spoke about load sizes and safety requirements for harvest transport.
In Devon, around 50 members gathered at Westpoint for the county’s safety day where they heard about machinery safety, the importance of the Tilly Trailer check, learned about resuscitation from Devon Air Ambulance and heard from the Health and Safety Executive and Devon Trading Standards.
Panel firm Birketts covered the legal aspects of health and safety, and members heard from TB Champions, who support farming families facing the emotional and financial strain of a TB breakdown, pairing farmers with volunteers who provide one-to-one emotional support and practical guidance.
Health checks
Somerset’s event was hosted by branch chair Neil Macdonald at Orchard Park Farm, Hornblotton. As well as stations looking at machinery safety, working safely with overhead power lines, and the personnel implications of health and safety, there was the opportunity for members to have their health checked by the South Somerset Rural Health Hub.
Coastland College hosted Dorset’s event at Kingston Maurward House just outside Dorchester, where members heard from speakers including panel firm Clarke Willmott, Synergy Farm Health and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.
