GB poultry producers will be impacted by plans to align with the EU’s animal health framework which could lead to changes in veterinary practices and the management of exotic diseases including highly pathogenic avian influenza. Organic poultry producers will also need to align with the EU's organic regulatory framework, which has changed since Brexit.
A key area of concern has been organic poultry and protecting two key derogations which allow for the use of non-organically reared pullets for egg production up to 18 weeks of age and up to
- 5% non-organic protein in young poultry feed.
EU legislation generally requires that organic livestock must be hatched and raised in accordance with organic production rules, with an exception possible for pullets under 3 days old.
In GB, there are no fully organic commercial pullet rearing facilities.
