In this week’s vlog, NFU President Tom Bradshaw updates members on the joint NFU, WWF and RSPCA parliament event where we called on the government to introduce a set of core standards for agri-food imports.
Tom reacts to the publication of Defra’s Land Use Framework, which commits to domestic food production and the continued use of productive farmland for farming. But he reassures members that the NFU will look at the details to make sure British farmers and growers are protected.
He also tells members about the Southwest Chicken Conference, which comes at a time when growth is vital for the poultry sector.
NFU Deputy President Paul Tompkins talks about the Fens 2100+ event in Westminster, which centred on water quality and availability in the Fens, where he hopes for a similar approach to be rolled out nationwide to protect farmers from water scarcity.
NFU Vice-president Robyn Munt discusses the NFU's leading presence at the fairer funding for rural policing roundtable which took place in Westminster, alongside Police and Crime Commissioners and the National Rural Crime Unit, who spoke about the importance of funding for policing in rural areas and greater collaboration.
Robyn further welcomes new livestock worrying powers coming into force this week under The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act after years of NFU campaigning, and celebrates the work of NFU Education after its latest live lessons were watched by more than 250,000 students across the country.
Finally, Tom acknowledges the impact of the global energy crisis on members, and thanks everyone for the information they are feeding back to the NFU. He also updates on the government's commitments for greater transparency on red diesel and fertiliser prices.
