Now entering its fourth year, the partnership brings together expertise, resources and local knowledge to help protect farmland, businesses, wildlife and communities across Hertfordshire.
Established in 2022 and believed to be one of the first partnerships of its kind between a local fire and rescue service and NFU county branch in the UK, the collaboration has become an example of best practice, with similar arrangements now being adopted by other fire services.
Over the past four years, HFRS (Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service) and NFU members have worked closely together in response to a number of significant field and wildfire incidents across Hertfordshire, including recent incidents in Croxley Green, Cuffley, Hemel Hempstead and Hunsdon.
During these incidents, local farmers have supported emergency response efforts by providing water bowsers to supply additional water resources and ploughing fire breaks to help limit the spread of fire across fields and open land.
HFRS invests in specialist resources designed for rural environments, including 4x4 firefighting vehicles that can access remote and hard-to-reach locations where standard fire appliances may struggle to operate.
These vehicles enable firefighters to reach rural incidents quickly and effectively and, when combined with farmers' valuable insight into the local landscape and practical support, help strengthen the county's response to wildfires and other rural emergencies.

The partnership extends beyond fire response to a wide range of rural emergencies. HFRS provides specialist support through its large animal rescue unit during incidents involving livestock, while farmers can offer equipment and operational insight during a variety of incidents.
Strong working relationships have also been established through HFRS Fire Control, which acts as a key point of contact. Agreed protocols and up-to-date location and contact information help ensure a swift and coordinated response when incidents occur.

He said: “As we've seen during recent periods of prolonged hot and dry weather, the risk of field fires and wildfires can increase significantly.
“Our partnership with the NFU has become an important part of our response to rural incidents across Hertfordshire. By working closely together, sharing knowledge and making the most of our combined resources, we're able to strengthen our response to wildfires and other emergencies in rural areas.
“Farmers have unique local knowledge, specialised equipment and immediate access to rural locations, which can make a real difference during an emergency. We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and commitment.
