55,000-page HS2 Bill before parliament

Legislation which could allow government to build ‘phase one’ of the HS2 high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham will go before parliament today.

The tentative aim is to get the Bill passed before the next general election in 2015.

At that point, government would have the power to start buying up houses and land regardless of whether the owner wants to sell.

The total cost of the project, which will also include links to Leeds and Manchester, is expected to be £42.6bn.

HS2 looks again at compensation

The company behind the proposed HS2 high-speed rail project is looking again at property compensation for those affected by its ‘Phase 1’ line between London and Birmingham.

We’re urging all affected members to reply to the latest consultation, which follows a challenge to HS2’s initial compensation package in the courts. The deadline is December 4.
