The AWC (previously FAWC) published an opinion piece on 4 June on animal welfare issues related to COVID-19. This was not written with industry or stakeholder involvement.
The committee is now preparing a second report and is seeking views on how many of the issues it identified and discussed in its first report have played out. In addition, it also wants to look at current and future impacts on animal welfare as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, including a possible ‘second wave’ which could affect the next six months and beyond into 2021.
It has identified a number of themes that cover business, just-in-case approach, personnel, behaviour, nutrition, breeding, transport, slaughter, health, charities, rescue centres and educational farms, veterinary profession and supplies.
