James began his new role on Monday 1 December, marking a temporary farewell to the North team. His work will further the NFU’s commitment to an approach to flood risk management that recognises the importance of maintaining existing assets and systems which, if in better condition, could better accommodate rainfall events or allow for swifter recovery from flooding.
James joined the NFU in June 2009 as a Food and Farming Adviser in the North East region before becoming Environment and Land Use Adviser in October 2012. Over the years, he has led on a wide range of environmental policy areas, including environmental schemes, water quality, planning and public access.
Since the creation of NFU North in 2023, James has played a pivotal role in major infrastructure projects and strategic planning, ensuring that members’ voices were heard during developments of major cable, road and pipeline projects and water company business plans.
Memorable moments
Reflecting on his time in the region, James said: “Some of my most memorable moments have been those opportunities where I’ve been able to support members through challenging situations. The region has faced countless flood events and I’ve worked with partners to help members to recover and to safeguard farming communities. That’s why I’ve decided to take up this secondment – to contribute to national policy and strengthen our approach to flooding.”
Recruitment for James’ successor is underway and will be announced in due course.
