“We have a great story to tell, but it isn’t always easy to be heard by the public.” NFU Poultry Board member Lucy Sanderson shares the importance of promoting the poultry sector.

In my eyes, eggs are the ultimate superfood.

They provide a nutritious, versatile, and affordable source of protein and are full of benefits for people at every stage of life.

Eggs can aid growth, improve brain function and support physical strength. They even come in their own biodegradable packaging!

As a free range egg producer, I’m incredibly proud that our family farm plays a part in supplying delicious and nutritious eggs for consumers to enjoy.

Great product, great story

When I joined the NFU Poultry Board in 2024 one of my priorities was to look for opportunities to promote British poultry products to consumers. I believe we have a great story to tell, but it isn’t always easy to be heard by the public.

The egg sector is a great British success story.

In 2024 we produced 11.9 billion eggs in the UK, which represents a self sufficiency figure of 88%. As Brits, we each eat on average 199 eggs per year, 26 eggs per person more than we were eating 20 years ago.

We’ve also got a great product.

Eggs are packed with nutrients and are naturally rich in digestible protein, vitamins and minerals. One medium egg contains 6.4 grams of protein and a significant proportion of an adult’s daily recommended intake of vitamin D, B2 and B12.

They can be eaten as a whole food or as an ingredient in a huge variety of dishes as part of a balanced diet.

Promoting the sector

One of the NFU Poultry Board’s priorities is to promote the benefits of poultry meat and eggs and we are keen to support members who want to get involved.

We can all play a part in this by sharing key facts and messages when speaking to people, whether that’s members of the public, neighbours, customers or government officials and MPs.

The NFU’s A closer look at poultry is a handy resource to help with facts, figures and mythbusting.

World Egg Day

A great way to promote what we do as poultry farmers and highlight the many nutritional benefits of the humble egg is to get involved in initiatives like World Egg Day on 10 October.

This year’s theme is ‘The Mighty Egg: Packed with Natural Nutrition’ and aims to celebrate the powerful role eggs play in nourishing people across the globe.

The NFU is supporting the campaign and we want to see as many members get involved as possible.

Let’s come together to celebrate the humble egg, and tell our story to the public.
