Broiler producers, rearers and breeders are being asked to help the NFU to understand the age and condition of poultry sheds across the UK, to aid lobbying work for the sector. This survey has now closed.

The NFU sought input from members and non-members within the broiler sector to contribute to the NFU's poultry shed age survey. It will be expanded to include other sectors such as eggs in the spring.

Mirroring a study last conducted by the NFU in 2014, the survey aims to inform our understanding of the current age and condition of the UK's poultry sheds.

The data collected will be used to inform the NFU's policy work by allowing us to understand the age and condition of key infrastructure within the sector and will allow the NFU to highlight where investment is needed.

The results of this survey will provide a much needed update to the previous figures collected in 2014 and help to inform the NFU's policy work on a range of key policy areas.

NFU poultry team respond to survey

The NFU poultry team has reported on the survey, highlighting that the results demonstrate the need for investment in the industry.

NFU Poultry Board members Richard Williams and Matthew Donald said: “If the government is serious about strengthening food security, it must back British poultry with targeted investment and planning reform.”

By investing in poultry housing, the government can enable the sector to champion its environmental credentials and safeguard nutrient neutrality, as well as contribute positively towards overall food security.

What is clear is that the UK broiler sector needs support, certainty and fairness applied across the supply chain if it is to remain strong in its production of quality, safe, nutritious and sustainably produced poultry meat.
