Two young North farmers joined Her Majesty The Queen at the National Harvest Festival at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 16 October.

Jessica Stewart from County Durham and Joe Bramall from Cheshire read prayers at the service, which was attended by NFU President Tom Bradshaw and NFU Gloucestershire member Peter Drinkwater.

A day to remember

Jessica said: “It was an honour to be asked to give a reading at the National Harvest Service at Westminster Abbey, celebrating and thanking farmers for their tireless devotion through challenging and adverse times. It was a surreal day and a privilege to thank farmers for their care for the land, livestock and crops in their charge. Fresh fruit and veg was placed in the exact spot that King Charles was coronated.

“Sitting just a few rows from Her Majesty the Queen, meeting famous faces, such as Charles Dance and Matt Baker, and glimpsing parts of the Abbey rarely seen by the public all added to the magic of the occasion.”

Joe added: "It truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity to read a prayer at Westminster Abbey. It reminded me of the importance of sharing the story of farming to those who aren’t lucky enough to be a part of it. Seeing the doors of Westminster lined with food and drink, all of which went to the right causes, showed the breadth and importance of our industry. It was certainly a day to remember.”
