Members host array of visits

West Sussex Growers have had a busy month; The Rt Hon Jess Brown-Fuller MP visited Tangmere Airfield Nurseries on 27 July.  Jess has a keen interest in horticulture having worked at Vitacress Herbs in the past and she is no stranger to West Suusex growers having visited Barfoots, Vitacress and Newey last year.

James Bardgett, Chief Operations Officer hosted the visit which explored the main crop glasshouses, the trials glasshouse, the factory, the building site for the new 4.5 hectare glasshouse and the famous staff canteen/pub!  A number of important issues were discussed including the seasonal workers scheme, planning, energy prices and infrastructure, IPM, education engagement, innovation and R&D and much more.

Then the next day Paul Tompkins, NFU Deputy President visited Barfoots, The Greenhouse Sussex and Farplants on 28th July. Paul was also joined by a number of NFU and WSGA colleagues. Julian Marks, CEO and Keston Williams, COO hosted Paul and the team at Barfoots, managing to fit in a tour of the farm which included courgette, tenderstem broccoli and sweetcorn harvest, the water treatment plant and the new, rather depleted reservoir, before visiting the sweetcorn factory which processes nearly 1 million cobs a day in the summer.

Paul also benefitted from seeing tomato growing and an ornamental plant site. Numerous topics were discussed during the day including water scarcity; labour - both seasonal and managerial; audit burden; planning restrictions on growth; energy prices; standing charges and infrastructure; education engagement; BNG and much more.

The full NFU East Region staff team were in Sussex for the annual staff away day. This was a fantastic opportunity to show off our part of the world and for colleagues to bond in an other wise remote working world!

All of these visits are only possible because of the generous donation of time from our members. We are so grateful to them to opening their businesses up which allows the fantastic work of British farmers and growers to be better understood by those who come to visit. We do not take for granted the time and effort involved by those who host and are grateful to them for taking the time, particularly during busy or difficult parts of the year.

Sussex food rescue charity wins community award

UKHarvest, a Sussex-based food rescue charity, has won the ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award’ at the Chichester and Bognor Business Awards, recognising a year of significant impact across the food and farming sector.

Over the past 12 months, the charity has rescued more than 444 tonnes of surplus produce from farms and food producers, redistributing it as the equivalent of over one million meals.

Working closely with leading agricultural businesses such as Barfoots and Natures Way Foods, UKHarvest plays a vital role in reducing on-farm food waste.

By collecting surplus crops that might otherwise go unused, the organisation supports growers in operating more sustainably, while ensuring high-quality produce reaches people in need.

The awards ceremony, held at the Avisford Hotel in Fontwell, brought together representatives from business, farming and community organisations to celebrate local achievements.

Communications and Fundraising Manager Joanna Lodge said: “Supporting the community is at the heart of everything we do at UKHarvest. We want to ensure that as much surplus food as possible is given to those in need and those wishing to reduce food waste.”
