It has been a busy month for the NFU and its members in Surrey, with some great engagement achieved across the county.

In early June, we were delighted to welcome members to our stand at the South of England Show and support them across the show weekend.

The show provided an important opportunity to engage with MPs who were hosted at a roundtable meeting. Mims Davies MP, Dr Neil Hudson MP, and James MacCleary MP were all present and will be followed up with on the points raised.

A health and safety roundtable meeting was chaired by NFU Vice-president Robyn Munt. This was followed by a busy drinks reception with members where the lifetime achievement award for John Hall was celebrated.

The day before the show, Hugh Broom and local members kindly hosted Chis Coghlan MP out on farm.

Hugh provided a detailed run down of his business and landed some key points on support schemes including SFI, trade, small abattoirs, and rural crime.

On a branch level, it was great to join the joint Surrey West and Dorking branch meeting. Local access officer John Baker provided a valuable insight into the work of Surrey County Council.

If you have any issues with footpaths and bridleways across your landed, please do reach out and we will provide you with John’s contact details.

We are aware of a number of machinery thefts in Surrey and Sussex over the past month. Whilst we continue to encourage members to stay alert to the issue and to keep equipment secure, we will be working with Surrey Police as we head into the summer.

After what has been a busy month, we look forward to seeing a good number of members at our annual health and safety events in June, as well as county and branch farm walks across the patch.

Please do reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions about upcoming meetings or our stakeholder engagement in the county.

Warning over farm thefts

The NFU is in contact with Surrey Police and Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend after a series of farm break ins and equipment thefts.

The police have stepped up patrols in vulnerable areas and are urging farmers to report all offences to help them build up a picture of what is going on.

Surrey Police acknowledge that they make this request frequently, but they stress the importance of being informed about locations where suspects may be carrying out reconnaissance so that patrols can be targeted accordingly. Officers are keen to receive information about any suspicious vehicles, people or activity.

Farmers can either place the details in their local police WhatsApp groups, and officers will submit this, or email [email protected].

The same email address can be used to request a visit from the rural crime team or local officers. If preferred, a phone call can be arranged instead.
