Your Surrey county NFU update

A dry harvest

Harvest and dry weather - The NFU has been working hard to collate data across the country of how harvest has been so far in terms of yields and quality across numerous crops. I know that many of you will be finished by now, so please try to take the time to fill out our survey to help us build an accurate picture of the region. This will help us with our lobbying efforts when it comes to pressing government for further support following the dry harvest we have had. Please click here for more information.

In the last week of July, Defra announced that the majority of England are now officially in drought. This is following the extreme dry weather and heat that we have experienced since the middle of May. Please click here for the latest advice and information as well as our current lobbying asks.

Fire Safety - Drought and dry weather doesn’t only impact crop yields and quality. Paired with the extreme heat we have had, it has made everything tinder dry and at very real risk of catching fire. Please try to take as much precaution as possible when conducting field operations and have fire fighting equipment on hand where possible. Following the significant fire in Essex that unfortunately set fire to a building containing ammonium nitrate, it is encouraged that you contact the fire service to inform them of the location of fertiliser being stored and the quantity. For all of our fire safety and hot weather recommendations, please click here.

We look forward to seeing members at the Edenbridge and Oxted Show. It is such a fantastic demonstration of rural life, livestock and entertainment. The NFU have sponsored young people taking part in the livestock competitions, including sheep young handlers, junior stockman classes, and potential show cattle classes and wish all competitors the best of luck.

Warning over farm thefts

The NFU is in contact with Surrey Police and Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend after a series of farm break ins and equipment thefts.

The police have stepped up patrols in vulnerable areas and are urging farmers to report all offences to help them build up a picture of what is going on.

Surrey Police acknowledge that they make this request frequently, but they stress the importance of being informed about locations where suspects may be carrying out reconnaissance so that patrols can be targeted accordingly. Officers are keen to receive information about any suspicious vehicles, people or activity.

Farmers can either place the details in their local police WhatsApp groups, and officers will submit this, or email [email protected].

The same email address can be used to request a visit from the rural crime team or local officers. If preferred, a phone call can be arranged instead.
