The NFU North Board's Dairy Farm Walk and Kendamil Tour, held on Wednesday 6 October, gave members the opportunity to see first-hand two Cumbrian success stories: the Young family dairy farm and Kendamil, one of the UK's leading infant nutrition brands.

The event began at Jenkin Cragg Farm, near Kendal, where John and Nicola Young and family, winners of the Farmers Weekly 2025 Dairy Farmer of the Year Award, welcomed members to their farm. Farming more than 400 hectares, the family manages a herd of 550 pedigree Holstein cows, producing an average of 14,000 litres per cow. Milk is supplied to Dale Farm, while the business also sells around 200 freshly calved heifers each year.

During the farm tour, attendees were able to see the approaches that have contributed to the Young family receiving national recognition. Across the business, there was a clear focus on cow and youngstock management, alongside the use of technology such as health and heat-monitoring collars. The family has also invested in an anaerobic digestion plant and slurry separator to support efficiency and sustainability on the farm.

Following lunch at the Castle Green Hotel, members enjoyed a virtual tour of the Kendamil factory in Kendal. Kendamil has established itself as the UK's leading baby milk formula brand and continues to grow in markets around the world. The presentation highlighted the company's journey from a local manufacturer to a global brand, while remaining committed to using locally sourced British milk at the heart of its products.

Success at every stage

North Dairy lead and Cheshire County Adviser Helen Wainwright said: “The visit provided a fascinating look at how high-quality British milk moves from farm to consumer, and how investment, innovation and ambition can create success at every stage of the supply chain.

“The NFU North Dairy Board would like to extend its sincere thanks to John, Nicola and the Young family for their warm welcome and hospitality, and for taking the time to share their award-winning business with members. Thanks also go to Ross McMahon and the team at Kendamil for providing an informative factory tour and for sharing the story behind their continued success.

“Finally, thank you to all the North Dairy members who attended and contributed to such an enjoyable and informative day.”
