Northumberland County Show kicked off NFU North’s show season in style on Saturday 23 May.

Thousands of visitors flocked to Bywell Showground for the show, which reported its highest attendance in a decade.

NFU Deputy President Paul Tompkins, Northumberland County Adviser Charlotte Dring, the Northumberland County Officeholder team and local farmers were on hand to greet the public at the NFU stand and speak to them about British agriculture.

This year, the NFU’s theme was celebrating local food. The stand boasted the ‘Northumberland members market stall’ – a display showcasing a vast array of county produce - from potatoes, eggs, flour, grain, cheese and milk, to crisps, honey, handmade soaps and homemade beer.

There was a steady flow of visitors to the stand throughout the day. Plenty of families with young children stopped by to pet the lambs and calves on stand and to see Annabel the milking cow.

Hexham MP Joe Morris visited the stand to discuss topics including the SFI and HLS funding gap, species reintroduction, food security and the importance of supporting local food. Other visitors included The Dean of Newcastle, Very Reverend Lee Batson, The Bishop of Newcastle Helen-Ann Hartley, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth, Lord Curry of Kirkharle, and Northumberland Council representatives.

The hospitality stand was run by NFU Group Secretaries Cath Reed, Jayne Watson, Kate Sowden and Jane Potts.

Showcasing Northumberland

Northumberland County Adviser Charlotte Dring said: “The show was absolutely fantastic - the stand was busy all day, thank you to everyone who came along to see us. We were asked lots of questions about farming, the NFU, the sheep and the calves on stand, and the local produce on the market stall – it really sparked interest from the public.

“We wanted to showcase the breadth of produce available within the county, the talent of everybody who contributed and give a little snippet of what we stand for and what the public should be supporting.

“A massive thank you to all of our members, the county committee and everyone who helped with the stand and sourced the produce for the market stall. I couldn’t have done it without them.

“Special thanks to NFU Deputy President Paul Tompkins for attending on the day, his presence was really valued.”
