Around 25 members attended the NFU Midlands Younger Member Events tour in Derbyshire, which granted them a rare chance to peek behind the scenes at one of the country’s most recognised National Trust properties.
They got the opportunity to see how Chatsworth’s farming estate works, how it manages its natural assets and how the famous farm shop uses local produce.
The tour began with a talk from Head of Farming Davie Howlett and his team about the estate and an overview of its in-hand farming operations.
This was followed by a tour to the surrounding moorland, with talk from Head of Natural Capital Alex Cooke, who covered natural capital, sustainability and environmental projects. NFU Support Schemes Adviser Fergus Starkey then gave an informative talk about relevant grants available to farmers.
After lunch, the group went to Dunsa Farm and Chatsworth Farm Shop & Cafe. Executive Chef for Hotels Adam Harper explained how the estate supplies local hotels, restaurants and the farm shop.
Farm Shop Manager, Liam Spivey, spoke about how the shop has evolved from selling a handful of items to the vast selection of products it has now, including an on-site butchery and bakery.
Organiser, County Adviser Gabriella Gregory, and NFU Midlands Regional Board Chair Jane Bassett thanked those who attended and Davie Howlett and his team for the tour and hospitality.
