The government has announced an expansion to its funding for vet services allowing for support to be widened to fund multiple herds or flocks of the same eligible species (cattle, pigs and sheep) belonging to the same farming business.

First announced at NFU Conference, the inclusion of proactive and funded health assessments for multiple herds on the same farm will be crucial for those who manage multiple flocks/herds in different locations and will enable more support across the various livestock under their management.

Part of Defra's Animal Health and Welfare pathway, the animal health and welfare review and endemic disease follow-up allows farmers to apply for government-funded vet visits.

Since the schemes' launch in 2023, Defra says there have been more than 8,000 visits with more than 95% of farmers saying either that they have taken action or intend to based on the advice of their vet.

It’s encouraging to see government listening and expanding this support to reflect the realities on farm.”

This is the last significant update to the animal health and welfare review and endemic disease follow-up schemes launched via Defra's ‘Get funding to improve animal health and welfare’ service.

Welcome and practical step

Responding to the news, NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “Many farmers have already benefited from the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway, and it’s encouraging to see government listening and expanding this support to reflect the realities on farm. This is a welcome and practical step that will help more farmers access support to keep their animals healthy and productive.

“The ability to include multiple herds or flocks under one review contract will make a real difference, especially for larger or mixed farms. Disease prevention and early action are exactly what is needed, not only to further improve animal welfare but also to help farm businesses stay resilient and efficient.”

Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner said farmers would have “tailored support to each herd or flock" and reiterated the government's commitment to tackle disease and safeguard high welfare standards.

Earlier this year, Defra also widened the scope of the support to allow a keeper to apply for a visit to cover all of their eligible livestock, regardless of species (pigs, sheep and cattle).
