2026 harvest: Could your combine pass the fire risk test?

Combine harvester

With harvest under way, temperatures rising and fire risks increasing, the NFU and NFU Mutual are challenging farmers to test their combine fire prevention knowledge for the chance to win a practical prize.

Combine fires remain a serious risk during harvest, with high operating temperatures, dry crop material, mechanical wear and hot weather all increasing the potential for ignition if machines aren’t properly maintained.

With engine components reaching around 800°C and crop material able to ignite at much lower temperatures, taking simple, preventative actions can make a critical difference.

How much do you know?

The NFU has joined forces with NFU Mutual to encourage farmers and growers to put their knowledge to the test with a chance to win one of two leaf blowers worth over £200 each to support essential combine cleaning and maintenance.

Based on key guidance from its fire prevention campaign, the competition challenges entrants with a couple practical questions on identifying combine fire-risks and taking effective action.

The initiative aims to support safer working practices and help protect people, machinery and this year’s harvest.
