Last year, NFU Halifax worked alongside Calderdale Young Farmers and RABI to provide a Farming Hub at the showground for farmers to come and receive advice and support.
This year, newly merged NFU Honley and Halifax, Calderdale Young Farmers, the Farming Community Network, Field Nurse, the Moorland Association and Hird’s Vets turned the focus to education.
The NFU Honley and Halifax team organised an activity trail for children, with those completing all eight activities receiving an NFU goody bag.
At each activity, children collected stamps on their custom loyalty cards to collect their prize, and more than 200 goody bags were handed out throughout the day.
Activities included completing a ‘Where does our food come from’ activity sheet, milking Annabel the cow, planting seeds, digging vegetables, hook a duck, milling grain, pin the tail on the cow and identifying different wool types.
Other activities taking place across the Farming Hub featured included a sheep shearing competition, a hoist-the-bale challenge and an exhibit showcasing 80 years of local farming – to mark the show’s milestone 80th year.
In addition to the activity area, the NFU Honley and Halifax team served refreshments to visitors throughout the day from the hospitality stand.
A very special day
Emily Mitchell, NFU Honley and Halifax Group Secretary, said: “It was a brilliant day at Halifax Agricultural Show. We were busy all day long and it was absolutely amazing to have so many families visit the stand.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with young people and help them to understand where their food comes from and what farming is about.
“The day was very special and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my team and Robert Scholefield and Stacey Bradley from Calderdale Young Farmers. I am grateful for their support and to everyone who visited the stand and helped make the day such a success.”
