The NFU Horticulture and Potatoes Board met this week at Thanet Earth, where Board members discussed some of the key challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Hosted by Technical Manager Rob James, the meeting focused on the development of the horticulture sector growth plan with the Farming and Food Partnership Board, alongside ongoing concerns around seasonal labour availability, water security and the impact of extreme heat on crops, businesses and employees.
As ever, it was a very packed agenda with members highlighting the importance of long-term investment in water infrastructure to build resilience, while also sharing practical steps growers are taking to protect staff during high temperatures. Discussions also covered progress on the horticulture growth strategy, the UK-EU reset and border controls, as well as ongoing uncertainty around crop protection products and the need for UK growers to maintain access to a competitive toolkit.
Despite the challenges, the meeting reinforced the sector’s commitment to growth, resilience and supporting British horticulture.
