The NFU Horticulture and Potatoes Board met on 11 September to discuss the horticulture growth strategy with Defra and crop associations. Based on the NFU's own growth strategy, it includes proposals to boost growth through increased R&D funding and incentives for capital investment.
Energy costs, water availability and labour supply were also discussed. The board welcomed upcoming consultations on energy charges and support schemes, while calling for more detail on reservoir funding and planning reforms.
The government's confirmation of 41,000 seasonal worker visas for next year was also welcomed. However, the NFU will continue to push for a more dynamic approach to support further growth in the horticulture sector.
