More than 50 members attended the NFU and AHDB’s Crops Summer event in Aughton, West Lancashire, on Thursday 25 June.

The annual event, which provides attendees with insights into different Recommended Lists (RL) varieties of winter wheat, began with an update on the NFU’s work from NFU Crops Adviser Luke Cox and North Crops Board Chair Rob Conner. Topics discussed included fertiliser price, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and EU Realignment.

AHDB gave a talk on the global grain market, and ODA’s Gary Phillips spoke about the futures market.

AHDB’s Mark Bollebakker then gave attendees a guided tour of the trial plots of the winter wheat RL varieties.

Attendees took advantage of a free moisture meter calibration service run by Frontier and tucked into pizza served by former Cheshire County Chair Jonny Hewitt.

Lancashire County Adviser and joint North Crops Lead Aarun Naik, said: “This event has become an annual fixture, and some people come year after year. It’s always good to do this just before harvest gets underway. It’s a good social event too.

“Thank you to all the growers that came out in the hot weather. A big thank you to Andrew and Margaret Webster and family for hosting it, and to AHDB and Frontier.”
