Livestock

The NFU Livestock Board passionately believes that British farmers produce red meat of the highest quality and welfare standards and will continue to champion the cause of the British livestock farmer.

The NFU Livestock Board is made up of representatives from all four English regions and NFU Cymru and are passionate about the beef and lamb sector.

British beef and lamb are produced to some of the highest standards of food safety, animal health and welfare and continue to improve our environmental sustainability.

The board and team work to reduce the regulatory burden on farmers and ensure a fair return on their produce, as well as promoting British beef and lamb.

Push for better methane reporting: split-gas accounting

The NFU is calling for government to adopt split-gas reporting, recognising short-lived gases such as methane separately from long-lived gases such as CO₂ and nitrous oxide. Current reporting does not accurately reflect methane’s behaviour or the progress already being made in the ruminant sector.

Working globally, the NFU is fronting an international coalition letter, alongside Beef + Lamb New Zealand, with 32 farming organisations from 14 countries supporting the change.

Ruminant roadmap survey – have your say

Anyone working in the UK ruminant sector – from vets and farmers to government employees and academics – is encouraged to complete the UK Ruminant Antibiotic Stewardship Roadmap survey.

The ruminant roadmap is a sector-wide collaborative initiative tackling the challenge of improving and proving responsible ABS (antibiotic stewardship).

The goal is to understand how farmers/farms show and promote their responsible use of antibiotics and to find out what else can be done to make this even easier.

The survey closes on 28 February 2026.
